Spanish Colonial style Residence
Calabasas, California

This five-year-old, 5,200 s.f. house provided the base upon which we added the next layer of detail to create a stylish and livable home for a family of five.

The house had good bones and lots of space, but lacked detail and color in the interiors. With only minor architectural alterations and all new finishes, we totally transformed the plain vanilla interiors into a very special place.

A new wrought-iron railing on new dark walnut stairs offsets a custom chandelier hanging over the hand-colored tile floor in the entry foyer to provide a warm welcome for visitors entering the home. New ceiling beams, trim details and stone fireplace mantle add scale and detail to the living room, while new dimmer-controlled lighting and hand tied rug over new walnut floors help to make this room a cozy spot for conversation.

The loggia corridor that connects the more formal front to the informal back of the home is now paved in a combination of hand-colored ceramic and colored concrete tiles in a pattern that establishes a rhythm related to the building structure. The dining room, off this corridor, houses the family’s cherry dining furniture on a new hand-tied wool and silk rug over walnut floors, and is lit with new downlights and custom chandelier.

A new kitchen island that incorporates a wine storage area, trash and recycling, bookshelf, pull up dining area and a sizeable worktop sits on a new concrete tile floor. New accent lighting, moldings and wall color complete the room.

The family room looks out over the pool deck and spectacular view down the canyon, and features new ceiling beams, similar to the living room but much simpler, more informal in detail. Custom sofas and chaise sit on a hand-tied rug over new walnut floors, and new millwork bookshelves with seating niche and closed storage complete the modifications. Three very active children complete the room.
